Collagen production declines with age, starting in our mid-20s and decreasing by about 1% yearly. Fluctuating hormones, sun exposure, poor diet, smoking and stress accelerate collagen loss and hinder its synthesis. Modern diets, often lacking in collagen-rich foods like organ meats and bone-in cuts, may further reduce collagen-specific amino acids that are essential for skin, joint and overall health.
We can use research to gauge some documented timing, yet the honest answer is that it varies for everyone. Your body will prioritize where the collagen is needed most. Factors like age, your need for collagen (i.e. recovering from injury), diet, lifestyle and more, play a role in how quickly you may notice benefits.. Clinical studies on collagen peptides have shown improvements in skin hydration, smoothness, and appearance over 1–3 months of daily use.
Hydrolyzed Collagen is highly bioavailable, as it’s broken into shorter amino acid chains called peptides.. Once easily absorbed through the gut, these peptides supply the building blocks for new collagen and are thought to signal to collagen-producing cells, supporting natural repair processes.**
The beauty of powdered collagen is that you can tailor the dose. For maintenance, we recommend 6g (2 tsp) a day.To make this easy, the Ritual Scoop measures around 6g grams of True Collagen. For greater collagen support – like during recovery or for active lifestyles – 10-12 grams per day is ideal.
There are a few key differences between marine and bovine collagen linked in our journal article here. Ultimately, our marine collagen and bovine collagen are both effective - both providing 100% hydrolyzed type I collagen peptides and with clinically- backed benefits*. And so, the choice is more a matter of dietary preference.
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are a bioavailable and highly absorbable form of amino acids, meaning they are easy for our body to utilize**. Collagen exists in its natural form as very large, complex molecules constructed from lots of long chains of polypeptides. The collagen molecule itself is far too big to be absorbed across the gut wall, so it needs to be broken down into smaller chains called peptides. Once absorbed, these peptides help support the body’s natural collagen production in bones, skin, and connective tissue+.
Studies suggest that the body’s ability to produce collagen naturally starts to decline in our early 20s**. As we move into our thirties, this process may continue at an accelerated rate. Therefore, you may choose to begin taking collagen in your 20s or 30s to support your skin, joints, and whole body health as you age. Ultimately, whenever you decide to start your daily collagen ritual, the Ancient + Brave team will be here to support you and guide you through your journey.
A common myth surrounding collagen supplements is that they can lead to digestive discomfort. In reality, high-quality hydrolyzed collagen peptides are generally very well tolerated and are often used to support gut health**. However, when introducing a new protein source like collagen, specific enzymes are required to break them down effectively, and the digestive system sometimes needs time (and a little support) to adjust. If you have a sensitive digestive system, here are some tips that may support:
- Start with a smaller dose (½ teaspoon) and gradually increase to allow your digestion to adapt.
- Take it with food to aid digestion.
- Consider enzyme-rich foods like pineapple or papaya, or speak to your healthcare provider about taking a digestive enzyme supplement.
- Stay hydrated - drinking plenty of fluids supports digestion.
- Incorporate gut-friendly foods like fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut) and fiber-rich foods. Please reach out to our team if you need any additional support.
We keep our True Collagen and Wild Collagen purely collagen-focused to ensure a versatile and easily to use product. Our collagen can blend effortlessly into any drink, letting you adjust your dose as needed without the concern of over-supplementing on individual vitamins and added nutrients. This simplicity allows you to benefit consistently from high-quality collagen, while still having the flexibility to complement it with any additions based on your unique wellness routine.
Type I is the most abundant type of collagen in the body, making up the majority of skin, bones, and connective tissues**.
The recommended daily intake of collagen is 5-15g, which is supported by most clinical studies.
Some individuals may benefit from the higher end of the range of 10-15g, such as those recovering from an injury, following a low-protein diet, experiencing age-related collagen decline, or engaging in intensive physical activity.
Collagen peptides are heat-stable up to 572°F - way above the temperatures you’d use for everyday cooking or hot drinks (boiling water is 212°F). This means you can confidently add them to hot drinks like tea, coffee, or even soups without affecting their benefits. In fact, many people love adding collagen to their morning coffee for an easy daily ritual.
However, we recommend not adding to fizzy or carbonated drinks. Collagen doesn't dissolve well in carbonated liquids, which can cause clumping or frothing, and may negatively affect texture and taste. For the best experience, stick to still beverages, smoothies, or any food or drink where it can dissolve smoothly.
You should always speak to your healthcare provider before introducing any new supplements or dietary changes during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Due to ethical constraints, studies in pregnant and breastfeeding individuals are limited, so we are unable to make specific recommendations. If in doubt, please consult your healthcare provider.
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are broken into smaller peptides that pass through the stomach into the small intestine. There, digestive enzymes further break them down into amino acids and peptides that can be absorbed by the body. These small fragments then support the body’s natural collagen production.**

"I swapped a usual delivery of powdered collagen for these handy little sachets as we were due to go on holiday. They are perfect for travelling! A measured amount in each little sachet, no mess and easy to pack. I did struggle a little to tear them open (others may not) so a little pair of nail scissors came in handy. Will definitely order again."
"I have been taking this supplement for just under a month and already feel the positive changes. My skin feels more radiant and this has been noticed by others. My menopausal symptoms have eased, especially with my emotional mood swings, as well as my energy increasing. I put it in my cup of tea every morning, so very convenient. I would highly recommend this product."
"Started using this Collagen about 4 months ago. The best thing is that it does not make a bad taste when added to my morning tea. It may be too early to see the significant outcome. But I have noticed my skin becoming visibly clearer than before. I am planning to continue this for a few more months to see if I can get all the benefits which it has promised."
"Yes it’s collagen, I tried it but going back to my old brand. With the A&B scoop, I’ve used one jar that clearly states approximately 40 servings…. I got for 22-25. I know consistently is key and been a collagen user for nearly 3 years. I would have continued with this had the measurements been more accurate."
"This is my first month of using ancient and brave collagen so I haven’t seen huge changes. My skin is feeling great though, so I am hoping this is a positive sign. There is no taste to this one which is great as I take it with my coffee every morning."
"This is fab collagen mixes well and no taste which is very good and I’m on week 4 and starting to feel a difference I love the jar it comes in and the free scoop too. And love how you get refills too which helps the planet too."
"I am enjoying the true matcha in my first decaf coffee of the morning. I always use 1/2 oat milk and 1/2 steralised skimmed milk with a spoonful of decent honey. It is creamy, frothy and feels very indulgent, despite being low in calories but high in all the good stuff. Thank you A&B. X"
"I had previously taken some well known brand for a few mouths with not seeing any difference and the taste was disgusting, I then tried this brand.. wow not only does it not have any taste but I can actually see a difference, I didn’t buy it on the subscription as sceptical but now I’ve signed up and on my second Jar, not only that but I’ve been introduced to creatine which I’m really happy with. I have a rare brain disease and recently been diagnosed with MS. Honestly go and buy some, I highly recommend it."
"I've only been taking true collagen for a month or so so it's early days; But I've just cancelled a Doctor's appointment because marks on my skin that I thought may be serious have started clearing up. Which is amazing!"
"I think it’s adding to my life and well-being it’s only been 4 weeks and i’m recovering from a major op so il keep going and hope for pleasing results. The true collagen dissolves best in a warm drink The creatine iv paused as i cannot physically excercise due to op but i found in the first weeks of use a difference in my energy and appetite. The creatine dissolves easily ."
